10 Underwhelming Arsenal Signings Who Became Cult Heroes

2. Perry Groves

One of George Graham's first signings back in 1986, the ditty 'We All Live in a Perry Groves Wonderland' can still be heard resonating around the Emirates despite the left-winger having since packed his bags for Southampton 22 years ago. Such is Groves' long-standing popularity amongst Arsenal fans, that when Ashley Cole was due to release his autobiography, supporters produced a campaign whereby they successfully ensured that Groves' book outsold that of their former left-back. Making over 150 appearances in a six year spell for the Gunners, Groves was loved for his dedication, enthusiasm and commitment, as well as setting up Charlie Nicholas for the winner in the League Cup final against Liverpool during his debut season. His finest moment, however, arrived in the dying moments of the 88/89 season, when unleashed from the bench, he weaved elusively to create the space needed for Michael Thomas to fire home that famously dramatic title-clinching goal at Anfield. 'We All Live in a Perry Groves Wonderland' indeed.
