10 Weirdest Football Transfers That Happened This Summer
5. Hummels To Dortmund (33.8m)
Right, Mats Hummels is a bloody good defender, isn’t he? This man has won the Bundesliga FIVE times, he’s a 70 capped German international who won the World Cup in 2014, along with a string of other German domestic trophy’s and runners-up medal in the 2013 Champions League Final. He’s been a class act. There’s no doubt about that and when he moved from Dortmund to Bayern Munich in 2016, it was something of a homecoming for the former Academy graduate.
It’s fair to say he had a good run back in Bayern and was part of a winning formula as Bayern won three back to back titles in his spell. By 2018/19, though, Hummels' spell as the ever present heart of this German giant was coming under threat. Blaming his lull in performance on illness didn’t exactly convince his coach Niko Kovac and by the end of the season the prospect of Hernandez, Pavard and Sule being the centre backs Bayern will build their new dynasty upon for the future, meant that Hummels would be more than likely cleared out for the 19/20 season.
Enter Dortmund, for some strange reason. Don’t get me wrong. Hummels could still have a part to play in a squad and his experience is invaluable but for a team so focused on giving chances and opportunities to their youngsters, this is a weird move. Dortmund’s defence was pretty badass last year, (they conceded less goals in the league than Bayern last season)prodigies such as Akanji, (Diallo before his sudden departure, surely sue to this odd Hummels venture) Zagadou, Guererro and the prospect of Madrid loanee Hakimi will make up a defence that probably didn’t need to be weighed down by such a big money signing, so late in his career. An odd move for the Yellow Submarine.
