10 Worst Back To Back NBA Draft Picks Of The Last 10 Years
5. O.J. Mayo Before Russell Westbrook
Another MVP candidate, Russell Westbrook, averaged a triple-double this season and almost single-handedly took the Thunder to the playoffs. After Kevin Durant left for the Warriors, Westbrook took over the team and proved that he plays his best basketball when he has something to prove. During his two years at UCLA Russ wasn't all that impressive, at least compared to what he's doing now. He spent his first year adjusting to college basketball and was mostly used because of his defensive abilities. Westbrook was taken by the Seattle Supersonics/Oklahoma City Thunder fourth overall in the 2008 NBA Draft.
The player taken immediately before him is no longer in the NBA. Not because of lack of talent, but rather because of violating the league's drug policy. O.J. Mayo was a phenomenal scorer. If it wasn't for the one-and-done rule, which forces high school players to spend one year in college or abroad in order to be nineteen and eligible for the draft, Mayo would've joined the NBA straight out of high school a year earlier. Instead he had to pick a school and settled on USC (University of South Carolina). He obviously impressed there.
Mayo peaked too early, as his rookie year remains his best statistically. After two seasons as a starter, Mayo became the sixth man for the Grizzlies. Then he bounced around the league, lost confidence and gained weight. He won't be able to play in the NBA for two years for said violation.
