8. Jonjo Shelvey's Red Card, 2012
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0WQfSLxSw0 Oh dear. Mark Halsey had a mare here. Rewind to 2012 and Manchester United were taking on old rivals Liverpool in one of the most hotly-anticipated fixtures of the season. Games between these two are always crackers, but the referee and his similarly-inept officials wrecked this one as a spectacle and an occasion with a string of barmy decisions. The first, and easily the worst of Halsey's mistakes came late in the first half. Liverpool's Jonjo Shelvey and United's Jonny Evans launched themselves into a 50-50 challenge with Shelvey's foot going over the ball and making contact with Evans, and Evans jumping in two footed. What followed was a pileup as both players rolled around in agony. Replays showed Evans clearly diving in two footed, which is a red card offence, yet Halsey opted to send Shelvey off and leave the United defender unpunished. It was a ridiculous decision. Either both should have been sent off for their respective roles in the challenge or both should have been booked. Letting Evans get away Scott free stank of injustice and ten-man Liverpool went on to lose 2-1. Halsey made a series of other blunders here. Luis Suarez was clearly fouled in the penalty area in the second half by Evans, only for his claims for a spot-kick to be waved away, as if to run salt further in the wounds, while Robin van Persie only got a yellow card for a two-footed lunge on Suso. To cap off his scandalous performance, Halsey awarded the Red Devils a late penalty as Valencia went down under minimal contact from Glen Johnson.
