10 Worst Ever Premier League Refereeing Mistakes

9. Cheick Tiote Disallowed Goal, 2014

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rzWoApvwWY We've seen a series of refereeing howlers throughout the Premier League's 22-year era, with the most recent gaffe coming earlier this year. Back in January, Manchester City took on Newcastle United in a league game at St James' Park. Edin Dzeko gave the visitors the lead after just eight minutes and it looked as though the Magpies were in for another difficult afternoon - yet it needn't have been. Cheick Tiote levelled the scoring with a sumptuous strike from just outside the penalty area that beat goalkeeper Joe Hart all ends up. But as the Ivorian whirled away to celebrate his wonder goal, he, his fellow players and Newcastle fans alike were left flabbergasted as referee Mike Jones disallowed the goal. Why? Because an offside Yohan Cabaye was adjudged to be impeding Hart by obstructing his view, even though replays showed this was simply not the case. Even former ref Mark Halsay came out and said the goal should have stood, explaining: "Interfering with an opponent is defined as: preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball. For example, by clearly obstructing the goalkeeper's line vision or movement.

"It was a tough call but the goal that was disallowed does not meet the criteria to disallow the goal. Technically, it should have stood. That is the law."

Magpies manager Alan Pardew was similarly displeased, raging:

"The guy's hit a goal that Joe Hart is just not going to save. It goes through a number of bodies but his vision is not impaired. I don't think he was clear in his answers - I couldn't work that out. He's got that wrong and unfortunately that was a massive call. In these types of games that has got to go your way."

The controversial decision didn't impact on the end result, at least, as Alvaro Negredo doubled City's lead late on to make it 2-0. But this was still one of the most shocking reffing decisions of the Premier League era.
