10. Man United 1-4 Liverpool, 2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGAusKj8FPI It was a game which should have seen Manchester United stamp on the fingers of Liverpools hanging title challenge, and stake their claim as champions-elect, but it proved to be a nightmarish 90 minutes for the Red Devils. Buoyed by Liverpools recent patchy form, they confidently took an early lead took through a Cristiano Ronaldo, but as soon as Fernando Torres shrugged off the overtures of a nervous Nemanja Vidic to equalise moments later, chaos ensued. Steven Gerrard would dispatch a penalty of his own before planting a kiss on an unsuspecting camera, before Fabio Aurelio made sure of a famous three points with a perfectly weighted free-kick 13 minutes from the end. There was even time for Andrea Dossena to get in on the act with an exquisite lob over a bewildered Edwin van der Sar to cap a marvellous day for the Reds, and leave the Theatre of Dreams as a cauldron of confusion. It was a tortuous afternoon for the Red Devils, and a defeat that they would still be coming to terms with had they not gone on to claim the title a couple of months later anyway. However, the reason for it has only just about snuck into this list is because Sir Alex Ferguson didnt actually see too much wrong with the quality of play.
''It was a bad day in terms of the goals we lost but I couldnt argue with the quality of play that much. One or two players were a little bit short in terms of what we expect of them but I do know the football was good, we kept driving on and they showed good energy, even though e only had two-and-a-half days to prepare for the match. It wasnt a result that anyone at Manchester United could be proud of, but nevertheless you have to say that Liverpool really played well and they deserved to win. - Sir Alex Ferguson, March 2009.
