11 Classic FIFA World Cup Matches

10. France Vs. West Germany (1982, Semi Final)

The 1982 World Cup semifinal included one of France's greatest teams, spearheaded by the inspirational Michel Platini, as they took on a decent West Germany side full of back-and-forth drama. The game had one of the most explosive extra time periods in World Cup history, and was also the first to be decided with a penalty shoot-out.

Germany scored first when Pierre Littbarski fired in a low shot from about 18 yards out. However, France equalized within the first half thanks a Platini spot-kick. Thereafter, the game remained tied for the rest of the regular 90 minutes, though both sides had their chances to finish the match before extra time. France's Manuel Amaros went closest to winning the match when his shot rebounded off the bar in stoppage time.

In the extra time that followed, Marius Trésor fired in a sweet volley to put France 2-1 ahead, and when Alain Giresse scored to make it 3-1, the match seemed over. However, West Germany were far from beaten and pulled a goal back just minutes later. Then Klaus Fischer equalized with a terrific short-range bicycle kick, and we went to penalties. The Germans, as they usually do, won the shoot out.
