11 Sports That Aren't Contested At The Olympics (But Should Be)

2. Watersports

waterskiingcommons Skiing and snowboarding are the core of the Winter Olympics, and will see their programmes expanded even further at the 2014 games in Sochi, Russia. Their equivalents on water, which include the likes of waterskiing, wakeboarding and surfing, are not contested in the summer games, however, despite the inclusion of several other sports involving water, ranging from rowing and canoeing to sailing and swimming. A strong argument against the inclusion of surfing may be the difficulty in sourcing an adequate source of waves, but this can easily be remedied through the use of modern artificial wave pools. Waterskiing and wakeboarding, meanwhile, merely require a lake and either a boat or cable system. With the potential for both slalom and trick events, the prospect of seeing watersports in the games is an exciting one, though given that wakeboarding is competing on its own for a spot in the 2020 games, their inclusion (if eventually approved by the IOC), may be incremental.
