12 Connections Newcastle United Have With The USA

8. Brad Friedel

Strictly speaking, Brad is a former United player, but he deserves his own category because he actually did something on these shores which is more that can be said for the other three Magpies found in entry 11. Friedel was signed by Kevin Keegan in 1994 but was denied a work permit so didn't actually make a first team appearance for United. Instead the keeper, who would go on to have a stellar career with the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, was loaned to Danish side Brondby. And after sitting on their bench and failing to make a single appearance, the American signed for Graeme Souness' Galatasaray. Fortunately for Newcastle, the arrival of a young Shay Given a couple of years later would soften the blow of this one.
