12 Newcastle Players Who Returned For A Second Spell On Tyneside
6. Glenn Roeder
First Spell (As A Player, 1983-89): League Appearances: 193 League Goals: 8 Second Spell (As Manager, 2006-07): Games Managed: 72 Wins: 33 What a centre-back - and a captain - London-born Glenn Roeder was for Newcastle United. Signed from Queens Park Rangers in 1983, the former England B international made 193 league appearances for the Magpies over seven seasons, netting eight times. Unfortunately for Roeder he fell victim to the curse of the caretaker boss when he returned to the club, having been elevated from his position of youth-development manager once Graeme Souness was sacked in February 2006. Extremely successful during his time in temporary charge of the Magpies, but once his appointment became permanent then life became a lot more difficult for the former Newcastle skipper. Loved already on Tyneside for his battling traits as a centre-back, Newcastle fans really wanted Roeder to succeed as a manager when he took charge - and he did, for a period. Of his 72 matches in charge, Roeder claimed victory in 33 of them and lost just 24, giving him a win ratio of 45.83%. This was bolstered by European successes, however, and, although Roeder's tenure overall was a successful one, it ended in disappointment and his resignation in May 2007.
