The top teams' academies, these days, appear to be geared less at nurturing players to one day occupy a spot in the first team than they are at selling them on to ambitious Championship teams with deep pockets.

When it comes to Arsenal centre-forward Chuba Akpom, though, there haven't been any takers, owing perhaps to his dismal record in front of goal: the former England youth international has found the net just seven times across nearly 70 games in the lower leagues (albeit, perhaps only half of those being starts).

The soon-to-be 22-year-old has, accordingly, been left in a state of limbo: his parent club don't seem be interested in giving him any minutes and, bizarrely, neither have they seen fit to find him another loan team.
