In the story of a season, some mistakes will never lose their disbelief factor.

Just as Steven Gerrard's slip last year cost Liverpool their big chance, and Newcastle's replacement of Lee Clark with David Batty robbed them of their Premier League title in 1996, Newcastle's baffling decision to decimate an already limited defence was the foundation of the inevitable decline that followed.

Whether you think Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was good enough or not (he's better than Mike Williamson by about a light year) or Davide Santon was too much of a crock, the decision not to replace either at all was mind-numbingly stupid.

To think that Newcastle would be forced to play out the majority of the season with the same central defenders who saw them through the Championship was just too much to take. And that's before they sent Remie Streete out on loan, taking away another covering player.

It's almost like they wanted to fail. Which can be the only justification for anyone persistently playing Mike Wiliamson.
