13 Football Moments That Defined 2013

8. Luis Suarez's Biting Madness

The football world was shocked on April 21st when Luis Suarez was caught up in a bizarre biting incident at Anfield. The Liverpool striker sensationally BIT Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic on the arm during the two side's Premier League clash, and evaded what should have been a straight red card to go on and dramatically head in an equaliser in the 2-2 draw as referee Kevin Friend did not see the incident. Punishment - and a whopping 10-match ban - was not too far behind in these times of video technology and retrospective action, however, and the Uruguayan's season was effectively over thanks to one stupid action. Suarez would not play again until September 25th, against Manchester United in the League Cup. His prolonged spell on the sidelines likely cost him a win at the PFA Player of the Year Awards, as well as the chance to pick up the Golden Boot, won by Tottenham's Gareth Bale and United's Robin van Persie instead, respectively.
