14 Best Football Pitch Invasions

2. England v Scotland, Wembley, 1977

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGLrfSn4dvc There was widespread outrage and condemnation of the tartan army€™s behaviour following their momentous 2-1 victory against England at Wembley in 1977. Looking back at the footage though reveals a largely joyous, if somewhat inebriated, crowd revelling in a rare win away in the old enemy€™s back yard. The crossbar breaking scene was one of the iconic football moments of the decade. Although the pitch was due to be relaid after the game, much was also made of the Scots tearing it up to take back home and plant in their gardens. This did mark the start of a decline in desire for the Home Internationals tournament. Though the competition continued, crowd problems had begun to occur in games with increasing regularity. Manchester United had to play a home game against St Etienne in Plymouth during the following season and West Ham were forced to play behind closed doors in 1980 following trouble away at Castilla. After 1977 there remained a huge degree of tension within the establishment having seen the damage caused by the Scots and the frequency of trouble at other football matches. With the home nations, and England in particular, starting to attribute lack of success in major tournaments with high numbers of games played it was felt that suspending future tournaments would be best.
