13. Jimmy Glass, Carlisle United v Plymouth Argyle 1999

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wil8d95lHTw Carlisle United went into the final game of the 98/99 season against Plymouth Argyle rooted to the bottom of the Football League. A win for Scarborough in their last match would send Carlisle tumbling into the Conference. With their fate out of own hands, an air of inevitability filled the town. "The atmosphere around the club and in and around the town was despondent." said on-loan goalkeeper Jimmy Glass when asked to reflect on that day. Momentary hope arrived upon news that Scarborough were losing at home to Peterborough; only for it to disappear when Carlisle went a goal down. A David Brightwell equaliser rekindled that hope but even with Scarborough having lost, despair started to sweep the ground as all attacking efforts proved futile. Deep into injury time the referee remarked to one of the Carlisle players that a corner would be the last action before he blew for full time. So with one last throw of the dice, Jimmy Glass was sent up for the corner. The ball fell to Glass in the goalmouth scramble and he shot home from close range sparking scenes of total euphoria and pandemonium. Carlisle were saved.
