14 Biggest Premier League Transfer Mistakes Of Summer So Far

9. Luke Shaw - Southampton To Man Utd

You could argue that Manchester United have made yet another mistake in this summer's transfer window following the big-money signing of Southampton starlet Luke Shaw. At £27 million Shaw becomes the world's fourth-most expensive defender in history and eyebrows have been raised over the size of the fee and the player's reported wage demands, while there are concerns United have paid over the odds. Shaw is on wages of around £130,000-a-week and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho recently said that signing the defender "would have killed his club". The Blues were also interested in the fullback - a Chelsea fan - but the size of the fee along with Shaw's wages put them off. Mourinho said:
€œIf we pay to a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for, to sign Luke Shaw, we are dead. We would have killed our stability with financial fair play and killed the stability in our dressing room. Because when you pay that much to a 19-year-old kid €“ a good player, fantastic player €“ but when you pay that amount of money, the next day, we would have had players knocking on our door."
There are concerns the size of the fee will put undue pressure on Shaw to be a success at the club while there are also suggestions his purchase could lead to dressing room disharmony at Old Trafford with more senior players now looking for a wage increase themselves. Mourinho continued:
€œThey would have been saying, €˜How is it possible I play 200 games for this club, won this and that, yet a 19-year-old comes here and gets more money than I get?€™"
