He started his footballing life with lowly Hamilton Academical in 2006, making his debut as a 15 year old against Queen Of The South, and the manager's faith in such a young prospect to push him up to the starting squad was a hint that Hamilton had something special here. McCarthy's reputation was growing exponentially, and much to every Celtic fan's delight, James showed his true colours as he expressed his delight with Celtic's interest in him. He's a die-hard Celtic fan. However, things didn't quite go to plan for both parties. McCarthy basically had his bags packed and ready to move to Glasgow's East End, but Celtic were too slow to carve out a deal for the youngster. It was said that Mowbray wasn't sure if the youngster was worth the money. McCarthy waited long enough, and then started listening to other offers. He quickly sealed a move to Wigan Athletic, and vowed to prove to Celtic that they had just missed out on a wonder kid. McCarthy is now at Merseyside giants Everton, and has been a staple Premier League player ever since his move to Wigan. And opportunity missed...
