Arsene Wenger signed Oleg Luzhny as cover at right back for Lee Dixon after he impressed the Gunners' manager during Arsenal's clashes with Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League. The fullback was known for his surging runs down the flank to join the attack and had won seven consecutive league titles in Ukraine. He was also captain of the Kyiv side who pulled off some terrific results in Europe. Although not a complete flop, these performances did not follow him to the Premier League. He struggled early on and looked suspect defensively while not offering any attacking thrust. In truth, Luzhny was never going to become Arsenal's first choice right back, with Cameroonian Lauren signed a seaosn later as Dixon's long-term replacement, but the Ukrainian did make 110 appearances in his four years at the club. A big clue to how poor Luzhny was during his spell at the club is the fact that Arsenal fans took to calling him 'One Leg Luzhny'. He moved on to Wolves when they got promoted to the Premier League in 2003 but only spent a single season there.
