Number of caps: 2 John Fashanu always considered himself Nigerian, but that didn't stop him making two appearances for England. A rampaging, battering ram striker for Wimbledon, Fashanu was a nightmare for top flight defenders and in 1989 was selected for a friendly tournament, appearing against Scotland and Chile. Fashanu didn't find the net in either game and struggled to make an impact. It was no real surprise given that the Wimbledon side he was so successful in played an aggressive, long ball style, not matched by England at all. If England decided to play the Wimbledon way and be physical against better sides, then it could have worked. But they didn't, and it didn't. It was a classic case of calling up a player based on club form, even if the player's style is not suited to how England play. It was not really Fashanu's fault, but it should not have taken a genius to work out that he would not have been a success.
