15 Worst Ever Man Utd Premier League Signings

10. Juan Sebastián Verón

Make no mistake about it, Argentinian midfielder Juan Sebastián Verón was a beautiful footballer to watch. Aggressive, hardworking, and technically superb, it seemed like he was tailor-made to ply his trade at Old Trafford. For this writer personally, it pains me to have to include Verón on this list, but when it comes down to it he just didn€™t cut it during his time at Manchester United. Now The Little Witch (gotta love a good nickname) did actually have some good games in a United shirt, it€™s just that they were too far and few between to justify the whopping £28 million he cost them in 2001. Prior to his time at United, particularly during his time in Serie A with Sampdoria, Parma and Lazio, it was easy to see why Verón was considered worthy of such a hefty fee. Unfortunately for Verón and Man Utd, he just seemed to struggle with the frantic pace of the Premier League in comparison to the more methodical Italian game. It would be no coincidence that Verón€™s best performances for the Red Devils would come during European nights. On the media criticism placed on the midfielder€™s displays, Alex Ferguson made his thoughts perfectly clear: €œVerón is a f*cking great player. And you€™re all f*cking idiots.€ Verón would leave Old Trafford in 2003 for £15 million, representing a £13 million loss for Utd. He would continue to struggle with the English game but would resurrect his career with a loan move to Inter Milan before returning to Argentina and eventually retiring for good (after an initial premature retirement) in 2014 at the age of 39 whilst playing for boyhood team Estudiantes.
