15 Worst Ever Man Utd Premier League Signings

9. Dong Fangzhou

Who? Nobody could blame you for either having never heard of Dong or completely forgetting about his existence. The Chinese striker signed for Manchester United in January 2014 for an initial fee of £500,000, rising to £3.5 million based on appearances. Safe to say, former club Dalian Shide didn€™t get a penny more than the initial £500,000. When it all comes down to it, Dong€™s Old Trafford arrival was merely a marketing tool to boost the club€™s fanbase in the Asian markets. Even when he signed for United, it was already known that he wouldn€™t be eligible to play for the first team due to being nowhere near capable of being granted a work permit. As such, he was loaned out to United feeder club Royal Antwerp in the Belgian First Division. It would be December 2006 when Dong was finally given a work permit to wow at the Theatre of Dreams. Only he didn€™t wow. In fact, he barely played. Dong€™s Old Trafford career would see him make a total 3 appearances for the Red Devils, with his only start coming in a 2-0 League Cup defeat against Coventry. This instantly forgettable forward (bar the teen snickering his name induces) agreed to mutually terminate his United contract in 2008, returning to Dalian Shide in his native China. He would actually end up trying his hand in the Polish, Portuguese, and Armenian leagues at a later date, although the now-30-year-old Dong is back in his homeland and playing for Hunan Billows.
