16 Newcastle Players You Won't Believe Are Seasoned Internationals
15. James Troisi - 23 Australia Caps
Newcastle United: 2005-08 Position: Midfielder/Forward Nationality: Australian Premier League Appearances: 0 Premier League Goals: 0 International Caps (Goals): 23 (4) If you'd have told Newcastle United supporters three years ago that James Troisi would score the goal that would prove to be the winner in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup final, they would have laughed in your face. Yet that is exactly what happened earlier this year. The attacking-midfielder signed his first professional contract with the Magpies in January 2007 and stayed on Tyneside for 18 months, but failed to make any progress at all. He first moved to Turkish club Genclerbirligi, then to Kayserispor and Atalanta - before a loan spell at Melbourne Victory brought 12 goals in 29 games. As a result of his spell in Melbourne, Juventus paid £750,000 to secure Troisi's signature - but then sent him out on loan to Zulte Waregem, for who he netted five times in 23 games. It is Troisi's international form that is surprising as well. He has won 23 Australia caps, netted four times and won the Asian Cup. Who'd have thought that would happen based on his Newcastle form?
