16 Reasons Why Newcastle Have Gone From Mid-Table Mediocrity To Relegation Fodder

16. Failure To Strengthen The Squad Adequately During The Off Season

Yes six players - Siem de Jong, Remy Cabella, Emmanuel Riviere, Daryl Janmaat, Ayoze Perez and Jack Colback - may have arrived on Tyneside, but a whole host were allowed to go. Newcastle didn't even keep par with the season before, and in all honesty those who have come in haven't been good enough. Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow were also signed, although they loaned back to Nottingham Forest immediately, while Mathieu Debuchy, Hatem Ben Arfa, Sylvain Marveaux, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and James Tavernier all either left the club on loan or permanently. Loic Remy was not replaced upfront, while no adequate substitute for Yohan Cabaye was recruited either. Cabella and Riviere have been major disappointments, while Siem de Jong has been injured for the majority of the season. Basically a typical cock-up of a transfer window from Newcastle United - and it has meant that, as the season has progressed, the squad's lack of strength and depth has left them short.
