16 Things Newcastle Fans Need To Know About Steve McClaren

6. McClaren Has Become Known As "The Wally With The Brolly" And "Second-Choice Steve"

It's fair to say that Steve McClaren's tenure as England manager was an unmitigated disaster - and his Three Lions reign helped coin two derogatory nicknames still brandished towards him today. First of all, McClaren was never the primary pick for the England job back in 2006 - instead he was the back-up to Brazilian World Cup-winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. When Scolari rejected the FA's advances, McClaren was called upon instead - earning him the nickname of "Second-Choice Steve". More famous, however, is the "Wally with the Brolly" nickname. When England went down 3-2 to Croatia at Wembley in a Euro 2008 qualifier and failed to qualify for the tournament, McClaren walked up and down the touchline with an official England umbrella in order to shield himself from the rain. Brilliantly, The Sun dubbed him as the "Wally with the Brolly" - and it is a nickname that has been used against him ever since.
