Having first cut his teeth in coaching at Oxford City as reserve-team boss and then at Derby County as assistant manager - where, ironically, he has just been sacked from - McClaren moved to Manchester United in 1999. He became Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant and the pair won three Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the UEFA Champions League and the Intercontinental Cup over the next three seasons. Fergie lent on McClaren for advice and his coaching skills - and he viewed him as a trusted assistant.
