20 Best FIFA World Cup Goals Ever

5. Manuel Negrete -  Mexico Vs Bulgaria (1986)

There can be few things better than scoring a wonder goal with a diving scissor kick at the World Cup. Except for maybe scoring that wonder goal in front of a home crowd of 100,000 screaming local fans.

Mexico had stepped in at the last minute to host the 1986 World Cup after Colombia were unable to afford it. It was the football-mad nation's second go at hosting (the first country to host the tournament twice) and the home fans wanted to see something special this time.

That special moment came during the first half of their second round encounter with Bulgaria. Manuel Negrete picked up the ball just outside the box and played a one-two with Javier Aguirre, all high in the air with the ball barely bouncing. With Aguirre knocking it back around waist height, Negrete flung himself at the ball with a sideways scissor kick, driving it beyond goalkeeper Borislav Mikhailov into the bottom corner.

(Mikhailov, the once bald keeper suddenly sporting an unlikely full head of hair, would get his revenge eight years later when saving two penalties against Mexico during Bulgaria's surprise run to the USA 94 semi finals).

In 2018 this was voted the greatest World Cup goal of all time in a FIFA poll, which may say more about the passion of Mexicans voting for it than anything else, but still it's a pretty amazing effort.
