30 Reasons Why Newcastle Fans Are Jealous Of Sunderland

18. Sunderland Are The Last Team To Win A Major Trophy

The North East is a trophy-barren land, starved of success. But while Newcastle fans love to remind the country about their 'incredible' history, let's remember they haven't got a scratch on Sunderland. 1973 saw the last major trophy between the sides. Ian Porterfield's iconic finish, Jimmy Montgomery's famous double-save, and Bob Stokoe's victory sprint. The game had it all. And ended in a trophy.

17. And Last To Win The League

Just a year before Raich Carter led his team to FA Cup glory, the 1935-36 side ran out as league champions. That's how long ago we have to look in order to find a North East league title. It was nine years prior to that since Newcastle won the top division, and before that, the 1908-09 competition, the same year as their thumping 9-1 defeat to Sunderland.

16. And Last Team To Reach Wembley

Fabio Borini gave Sunderland the lead by half time in the 2014 Capital One Cup, but sheer quality by Man City saw the trophy slip away from the Black Cats' grasp. The remarkable run on the way to Wembley was also a historic feat, and had all of the excitement that Newcastle fans are desperate to see at their club.
