4. Ryan Giggs - The Search For A New Midfielder Goes On
Commentators and pundits were left purring over Giggs' performance on Wednesday night. The cliché detector was in overdrive as Giggs "rolled back the years" and put in a star performance as he just "kept on going". Giggs' accolades were fully deserved in fairness. He provided inch perfect passes for RVP and Rooney respectively, which proved pivotal in the first and second goals. Giggs made more passes than anyone in United's team. Many critics argue that passing stats are a sham, with some players playing a multitude of simple passes. However Giggs made key passes and always looked as if he could create something when he was on the ball. The fact that Moyes turned to Giggs in United's most important game of the season really highlights the problem. Everybody knows that Giggs can not go on forever. This season the Welshman is without a goal and has only made 11 appearances. We must also remember that Giggs has taken on a coaching role, which is clearly a factor in his lack of minutes on the pitch. But after Wednesday is Moyes going to be able to continually drop the 40 year old? The central midfield gap remains unplugged at United and natural selection dictates that Ryan Giggs cannot plug it any longer. Marouane Fellaini, Tom Celverley, Darren Fletcher and (out of position) Phil Jones are the options available to Moyes. Giggs certainly seems the option of preference preferable option on the basis of Wednesday night's showing. To be fair to Moyes, this issue has been live long prior to his reign at Old Trafford. Sir Alex tried to replace Scholes and Keane many times but failed. We wonder whether David Moyes regrets letting Yohan Cabaye go to PSG without a fight?
