4 Ways Aberdeen Could Actually Challenge Celtic Next Season
As is the case in all of sporting history, records must, at some point, come to an end. Fraser Forster managed to stay morphed into a goal-shaped human wall for 1256 minutes of league football. The goal that ended the count was something to behold, and a credit to the Aberdeen team who have been showing the rest of Scottish football that the supposed smaller SPL teams can play great football too. During the days leading up to the match at Pittodrie, I was rather nervous about us conceding, and I'm sure some other fans were too. The obvious reason being that Aberdeen had just knocked us out of the Scottish Cup after a very surprisingly dominating away performance at Celtic Park. Aberdeen looked great in that cup match. I actually couldn't believe that it was a domestic game; their attacking football was fluid and frightful. They managed to secure space and time on the ball in areas of the pitch that other teams simply wouldn't dream about at Parkhead, and managed to be the first Scottish team to score against us since November, thankfully without ruining our league clean sheet/unbeaten record. Unfortunately, it was also a sign of what was to come in the league, too. Our records were about to come under more pressure than ever this season, and they crumbled under that pressure. The clean sheets, the winning run, and the unbeaten run - they all were stomped on by a defiant Aberdeen side, and they were the only team that were good enough to have done this. But why are Aberdeen so far behind Celtic if they can play like that? Well, put simply, they didn't have the best of starts to the league campaign. After winning their first two games of the season, they went through a long period of inconsistency. It wasn't until after the halfway point of the season that they started to make second place their own, and by then it was too late - Celtic had stormed ahead due to our huge run of wins. In all honesty, 51 points is not a bad tally to have after 27 league games. That's 3 points away overall from averaging exactly 2 points a game. If it wasn't for a few draws and a couple of losses, their points tally would look fantastic. But would they have kept up with Celtic? Not a chance. Celtic's form has been unbelievable in the league this season. If you win 15, 16 games on the trot, no one is going to catch up, especially in the league we are in, where the games between other teams frequently end in draws, scuppering each other's chances of racing up the ladder while Celtic race ahead. So how likely is it that Aberdeen will actually offer competition next season? A few factors have to be taken into account, read on to find out.
