5 Awesome Newcastle United Captains (And 5 That Sucked)

1. Bobby Moncur

Hailed as "the supreme sweeper and a most valuable asset both to Newcastle United and Scotland" by legendary Joe Harvey and rightly considered to be our greatest ever captain. Moncur served the armband with supreme distinction in the seven years he skippered the Magpies and remains the last to get his hands on a major piece of silverware. Moncur lifted the Fairs Cup in 1969 and no captain since has led us to a trophy triumph in a black and white shirt with the Perth-born centre back scoring three of his eight career goals in the two-legged tie with the Upjesti Dozsa, which included a brace in front of the 60,000 adoring Toon fans crammed into the Gallowgate. In 12 years at St James' Park he racked up 346 appearances for the Magpies before swapping Tyneside for Wearside in a shock transfer to Sunderland. Still, Moncur is ensured his place amongst the pantheon of greats to captain the Club and wear the no. 6 shirt that became synonymous with him. Click "next" below to read the 5 that sucked...
