Sometimes, a fight just makes sense. We'd all like to see Goku fight Superman, or Matthew McConaughey fight Keanu Reeves, or Brock Lesnar fight a meteor. For one reason or another, those fights all make sense. The same can be said for a champion vs. champion showdown between Jose Aldo and Anthony Pettis that sadly never came to fruition.

At the height of their power, Aldo and Pettis were among the most dangerous, unique strikers that MMA had ever seen. Aldo was a fearsome knockout artist who specialized in brutal, gut wrenching stoppages and Pettis once ran along a wall and kicked Benson Henderson directly in the face. A potential fight between them would have been like crack for MMA fans: two kingpins at the top of their divisions, meeting in the middle of the Octagon to try to break each other in half.

Unfortunately, it never happened. Aldo didn't want to move up in weight to fight Pettis, and preferred to stay at featherweight and defend his championship. Meanwhile, Pettis shockingly lost the lightweight championship in 2015 to Rafael Dos Anjos. While the two could technically still fight, both men are without gold, so any meeting wouldn't be as special.
