United supporters had had to sit through the 1970s and 1980s watching bitter rivals Liverpool dominate English football, but as the first season Premier League got underway, many felt Ferguson's side were at the beginning of a glorious new era. With Peter Schmeichel in goal- the Dane was probably the best goalkeeper on the planet at the time- Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister at the back, Giggs, Paul Ince and Andrei Kanchelskis in midfield and Mark Hughes in attack they were extremely strong.
