5. Felipe
Unfortunately, gone are the days when players would mingle with the common man by popping into the local shop or jumping onto public transport (Klinsmann and Vieira used to travel London by the tube, though not together, that would be madness), but thanks to the Internet and social networking, players are still able to communicate with fans from around the world. One such team to take advantage of this was the Brazilian club, Santos FC. With eight Brasileiro Série Aleague titles and three Copa Libertadores victories, Santos FC have built up a loyal fan base to make it one of the most popular clubs in Brazil and it could be argued that, thanks in no small part to players like Pele and Neymar, they have become one of the most famous clubs in world football. In July 2010, a group of players decided to touch base with fans by having a live video chat, which can be seen below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bW3g1_2nSN0 Needless to say, this attempt at reaching out to the fans doesnt go as planned, devolving into a hilarious argument between the players and the fans who took part. I expect your Portuguese is a little rusty, but at one point a fan suggests that the Santos goalkeeper, Felipe, has lettuce hands, which is roughly akin to what wed know as butter fingers. Any bridges that had been built between players and supporters are then promptly burnt, as the keeper utters the classy phrase What I spend on food for my dog is what you make in a month Obviously, not everyone likes to be reminded of the incredible wage gap between player and supporter, but what makes it equally insensitive is if you take into account the major news story that gripped Brazil at the time. And before you ask, Ive no idea where the players shirts went either.
