5 Reasons Why Spurs Were Wrong To Sack Andre Villas-Boas
5. Franco Baldini Was Head Of Player Recruitment
One of the major accusations thrown at AVB during his tenure this season was the club's recruitment policy over the summer. Following the sale of Bale for a world record £86 million, the club had plenty of pennies to reinvest in its squad, but the players that came in did not hit the ground running as everyone had hoped. Of the seven new signings brought in in the summer, none of them had any previous Premier League experience, and this was always going to make it hard for them to gel right away. Time was and still is needed for the players to settle into life in England, and that was one thing AVB was never given this season. One factor in relation to the signings that is frequently overlooked is director of football Franco Baldini's role in bringing the new players to the club. The Italian was charged with replenishing the squad after the departure of Bale, and brought in players such as Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen and Roberto Soldado, who have all failed so far to make their mark on the first team. The role of Baldini cannot be understated. Yes AVB would have had a say in the players that were brought in, but Baldini is the man that went to find them, and it is his job to assess how the players will cope with life in the Premier League. They were hailed as superstars in the summer, and they should go on to make their mark in the team once they settle into life in England, but the lack of cohesion between the players cannot be blamed entirely on AVB.
