5 Reasons Why Everton Must Stand By Roberto Martinez

4. He€™s Proven Shrewd In The Transfer Market

Martinez broke the bank to sign Lukaku from Chelsea following a fruitful loan spell at Goodison and, although some snorted at the striker€™s £28-million price tag, the Belgian international has repaid every penny of his asking price by banging in goals left and right. The Spaniard recognised the potential of the pacey hitman and securing his services on a permanent basis goes down as his greatest coup to date - up there with bringing the FA Cup to Wigan - but Rom is far from the only shrewd purchase the ex-Latics boss has made since his arrival on Merseyside, all on what many would consider to be a limited budget. Hard-tackling midfield veteran Gareth Barry has added some steel in the middle of the park since arriving from on loan from Manchester City, a move that was made permanent in 2014, while Deulofeu has brought flare to the right flank. Then there€™s Republic of Ireland international James McCarthy, who followed Martinez from Wigan, a man who has shown all the credentials of a future Blues captain. Sure, there have been flops - Arouna Kone struggles to deliver on a constant basis, Aiden McGeady lacked the stomach for the Premier League, and Antolín Alcaraz was a forgettable addition to the Goodison defence - but the likes of Aaron Lennon and Muhamed Besic have only enriched the Everton squad.
