3. Steve Darcis Stuns Rafael Nadal
On any normal list, Rafael Nadal being dumped out of a Grand Slam in the first round would surely be the top. It would be, were it not for other events and the fact that it seems fair to say that Nadal's loss came at the hands of more than just an inspired player. For the second year in a row, Rafa came in to Wimbledon struggling with his recurring knee issues hampering him - yet, by the same token, he was coming in having confirmed himself as the greatest clay court player of all time, having won the French Open for a record eighth time. Nadal was also heading in to Wimbledon as only the fifth seed, as his lost points from the 2012 injury started to mount up, whilst David Ferrer's performance at the French Open allowed him to overtake his compatriot. Many commentators pointed out that to win the tournament he had picked up in 2008 and 2010, Nadal would potentially have to beat Federer, Murray and Djokovic in order from the final eight onwards. They did not need to look that far ahead though. For in the first round, Nadal found himself with a horrible case of dejá vu as he faced the World No. 135, Steve Darcis. Much like Rosol had done, Darcis took advantage of all of Nadal's weaknesses and started to take the Spaniard apart in ruthless fashion. Winning the first two sets in tiebreakers, Darcis then broke Nadal's serve to pick up the win in straight sets. Nadal's loss was the first time he had ever been defeated in the first round of a Grand Slam and has cast serious doubt over the future of one of the very best.
