There are questions over which year this could have happened, but all signs point to 1962, the year a 22 year old Pele had helped Brazil to their second World Cup Title.

President of the Old Lady, Umberto Angelli, had travelled to Brazil, backed by Itailian car manufacturers Fiat, to talk to Pele's club team, Santos, and bring the Brazilian star back to Italy. Unfortunately, the Italian politician couldn't negotiate a deal and travelled back to Turin empty handed, after Pele confirmed he was keen on staying in Brazil.

The original offer in 1962 is rumoured to have began at $1 million, which today would work out at about $8 million, a lot of money for team that were willing to play abroad for $5000.
