6 Players Tottenham Hotspur Should Sign After The World Cup

He may be moody, reportedly difficult to work with, but he definitely has talent. The real question is whether Pochettino can control Shaqiri’s temperament. With a release clause of just £12 million, Shaqiri appears to be straight off the McSaver menu, especially considering the over-inflated market. Having a relatively decent individual World Cup with the Swiss national team will not have hurt his chances of getting a big move - in particular, the late winner against Serbia.

Shaqiri has carried Stoke for a number of years as one of the most creative attacking midfielders in the Premier League, and has also proven this talent in the German and Italian leagues. The real issue facing Shaqiri is that he will struggle to dislodge the likes of Son, Alli and Eriksen from their perches. Realistically Shaqiri will fit into the role similar to that of Nacer Chadli through the Andre Villa Boas’ reign and find himself used as an impact player coming on around the 70 minute mark.

With Spurs looking to target the Premier League title and a pretty pay packet in his pocket, it should not be difficult to convince Shaqiri that the Spurs bench is the best place to settle. The real challenge will be whether Shaqiri has the mentality and the ability to adopt Pochettino’s high intensity regime. If all else fails, after a season or two, he could be sold for double the money to a club in a league where attitude would not be questioned - either Major League Soccer or the Chinese Super League.
