If fixing the Chelsea starting XI is a jigsaw puzzle then Ivanovic is the first piece.

The Serbian has occupied the number 2 shirt for the Blues since the 2007-2008 season but didn't play in the league due to issues over pace and fitness.

Plenty of trophies and a fair few goals have followed since but this season his performances have been below par with nearly every team taking advantage of his lack of speed, although in his defence Ivanovic is a centre back who's been playing right back for years.

When his time comes the obvious replacement is current left back Cesar Azpilicueta, who was originally bought to occupy the right. This move would create a new problem on the left as Eden Hazard isn't great at tracking back. Jose did pinch Philipe Luis from Atletico Madrid as cover but he wasn't getting enough first-team football and opted to leave Stamford Bridge after just one season.

Chelsea's best hope at left back is Baba Rahman. The 21 year-old from Ghana has played there before, in the Champions League at home to Macabi Tel Aviv earlier last September.

Jose may see Rahman as too young and too attacking but if he does get a chance and can stay disciplined, Ivanovic's time as the blue number two may be numbered.
