7 Players Left Out Of Newcastle's USA Squad - What's It Mean For Their Futures?

6. Sylvain Marveaux

A player who many thought would never wear a black-and-white-striped shirt again, Marveaux looked like being given a reprieve once the new coaching unit arrived and promised to give everyone a "clean slate" from which to work.

Unfortunately, however, Marveaux was absent for the Gateshead win - and now he will miss the USA trip, as well as the start of the season - after suffering a hernia problem. McClaren said of Marveaux's absence:

"He is in for a hernia operation, if not he's had it already.
"Four-to-six weeks (he'll be out for) I think."

The midfielder enjoyed a decent season on loan in France, scoring three times and providing six assists in 33 appearances, and it looked as though he would return to Ligue 1 permanently this summer.

Since arriving at the Magpies from Rennes in 2011 though, Marveaux has made just 57 appearances for Newcastle - including just 13 starts in the Premier League - and has netted twice, even claiming he was "blacklisted" by the club.

Injuries have affected his progress, while Alan Pardew (and John Carver) did not seem keen on the 29-year-old, rarely giving him a decent run in the team or playing Marveaux out of position.

McClaren may finally give Marveaux a decent crack of the whip but this injury cannot help the Frenchman's cause with just a year remaining on his deal. Competition is fierce for a central attacking-midfield berth - with the likes of Siem de Jong, Georginio Wijnaldum, Moussa Sissoko and even Ayoze Perez, who was deployed in such a position against Gateshead, able to operate there - and Marveaux needed a good pre-season tour to be able to stick his hand up for selection.

Unfortunately now it appears like it will be a big ask for Marveaux to finally cement his NUFC starting place.
