7 Ups & 5 Downs From Premier League 2019/20 Opening Weekend

5. Brighton Stun Watford

For many, Brighton & Hove Albion were tipped as prime relegation candidates this season.

After a summer which saw the club bring in Matt Clarke, Leandro Trossard, Adam Webster, Neal Maupay and a deadline day loan deal for Aaron Mooy, it was questioned whether Graham Potter’s outfit had brought in enough quality to retain their Premier League status.

On the other side of the fence, Watford were expected to be competing for a European place if they could get off to a good start.

That good start, though, didn’t quite happen as Brighton went to Vicarage Road and emerged with a 3-0 victory.

It’s only the first game of the season, mind, so Brighton could well still be in for a relegation battle and Watford could well end up challenging for a European spot, but Potter’s Brighton side certainly impressed in their first outing of the season – the goals coming from an Abdoulaye Doucoure own goal, Florin Andone, and Neal Maupay.
