8 Best Late Comebacks In UFC History
2. Miesha Tate Vs. Holly Holm
While all of the comebacks so far have been incredible, there is something extra impressive about rallying back to come from behind and win when a title is on the line.
Holly Holm went into her fight with Miesha Tate at UFC 196 with incredible momentum. After falling below expectations despite winning her first two UFC fights, Holm dethroned longtime bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey in devastating fashion at UFC 193. This fight would be her first title defence.
Meanwhile, Miesha Tate was considered by many to be past her prime. Despite coming into the fight on a four-fight win-streak, Tate had already been finished twice by Rousey and was unlikely to get another chance at the title while Rousey held the belt.
Against Holm though, Tate was a different animal.
Holly Holm used her incredible striking skills to full effect in the first round, decisively winning it. Tate rallied back, however, and in the second, dominated Holm by using her wrestling to win the round.
Unfortunately for Tate, the third and fourth rounds went much like the first, leaving her down on all three judges scorecards heading in to the fifth and final round.
In the fifth, Tate threw caution to the wind attempting a multitude of takedowns but was consistently thwarted.
Until she wasn't.
Expertly slipping round to her opponents back and dragging the fight to the floor before attacking for a choke, Tate had just minutes to realise her dream of winning a UFC belt.
Caught in a tight rear-naked-choke, Holm had no choice but to submit or go unconscious, before choosing the latter. Tate had defied all expectations to become UFC champion.
Result: Miesha Tate def. Holly Holm via technical submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 5, 3:30
