UFC 209 saw the highly anticipated rematch between Stephen Thompson vs.Tyron Woodley which ultimately fell flat, especially because of the lofty expectations placed upon it.

The card was still packed with great fights, however. Though none greater than veteran Darren Elkins facing surging prospect Mirsad Bektic.

Despite having a sizeable experience advantage on his opponent, Elkins went into the fight a 5-1 underdog and was considered by many nothing but a stepping stone on Bektic's path to the elite.

In the first round, it appeared that Elkins was exactly the sacrificial lamb he had been widely-viewed as. Bektic dominated early, landing a serious of devastating strikes on the ground leaving Elkins in a bloody heap in one of the clearest 10-8 rounds in recent memory.

Elkins demonstrated his never-say-die attitude in the second round but he was still being technically outclassed by Bektic, who maintained his vicious assault on-route to winning another round.

The final frame saw Elkins have slightly more success, but Bektic remained in the driving seat. Then, a kneebar attempt gave Elkins the space required to reverse position and establish a dominant clinch against the cage.

Elkins used the position to his advantage, landing several heavy strikes. Then when Bektic managed to get out of Elkins' grasp, Elkins landed a thunderous right hand and a head kick to fold Bektic over unconscious.

Result: Darren Elkins def. Mirsad Bektic via TKO (punch, high kick) – Round 3, 3:19
