8 Defenders That Will Be In Roy Hodgson's Provisional England Squad (And 1 That Won't)

5. Phil Jones

Caps: 9 Goals: 0 It wasn't so long ago that Phil Jones was being discussed favourably against Man Utd legend Duncan Edwards, but the young defender's progress has stalled slightly since that flattering comparison. Along with many of his club team mates, Jones has come under intense scrutiny this season and is yet to be played in his preferred position over a long period of time. However, his commitment to the cause cannot be questioned and he is an old fashioned defender who wears his heart on his sleeve. Fans will recall his excellent man marking job against Cristiano Ronaldo in a previous Champions League encounter and Hodgson will be aware that he can rely on the United defender to stifle a specific opponent if required. Jones has the potential to be England captain one day, but his versatility means he will be used as cover for this year's tournament.
