8. One Of Germany's Most Successful Clubs Pre Bundesliga
Prior to the Bundesligas formation in 1963, teams were divided into regional leagues, with 1.FC Nürnburg competing in the Southern German football championship. Nürnburg would then compete in the quarter-finals and semi-final for a chance for the national title. Winning two titles between 1919 and 1921, der Club went a staggering run, remaining unbeaten in 104 official matches. Reaching the final the following year, the 1922 final finished 2-2, before a replay was played two months later which had to be abandoned due to Nürnburg having just seven players remaining. The Bavarian club then won three German titles between 1923 and 1927 before a dominant spell from Hertha Berlin saw the club from the capital reach the next six finals. Nürnburg also have three DFB-Pokal wins (1935, 1939, and 1962) prior to the Bundesliga, beating Fortuna Düsseldorf in front of 41,000 fans in a 2-1 victory during 62. Following the Bundesligas foundation in 1963, German football was one of the last countrys to have a nationwide league, with England, Spain and Italy already having one. Winning their first and last Bundesliga title in the 1967-68 season, Nürnburg havent come close to securing another championship. A yo-yo club between 1995 and 2004, Nürnburg failed to establish themselves in the top flight for a sustained period. A change in management in 2005 saw Hans Meyer takeover the reigns leading der Club to an eighth and six place finish, as well as a Pokal triumph in 2007, before being relegated the following season. Current VfL Wolfsburg manager, Dieter Hecking also had a successful spell in Bavaria. Despite leading them to any silverware, Hecking guided them to a top half finish on both occasions something Nürnburg have failed to do in the past couple of seasons. Finishing 17th in the 2013/14 season, failure to earn immediate promotion back to the top flight means the Bavarian side will battle it out in the 2. Bundesliga for another season.
