The links between what's going on at Ibrox and the dealings at St. James' Park don't stop there! As soon as the management job at Rangers became available, young Scottish coach Ian Cathro was linked with the vacancy, something which only became more anticipated once he left his role in Spain as assistant coach at Valencia. Considered a hot young prospect in the game of football management, Cathro is credited as a man who helped revolutionise the youth movement at Valencia, and Newcastle fans should be delighted that he's agreed in principle to become the assistant boss of their club, aiding first team manager, Steve McClaren for the upcoming 2015-2016 campaign. Long-suffering Newcastle fans definitely deserve to see their club win a trophy, but it's true to say that Cathro was heavily-linked with the job at Glasgow Rangers. Whether or not the young man would have been ready for such a monumental task as turning Rangers back in a positive direction remains a mystery, because it's obviously not going to happen now, but there was a time when he was considered the best choice as the club's new manager. Rangers desperately need an overhaul of their youth system, and Ian Cathro specialises in that area. That right there is what appealed to the current Ibrox board, who are eager to bring the average age of the first team playing squad down.
