Liverpool are expected to be busy before the transfer deadline closes, but their most important piece of business could be keeping hold of Philippe Coutinho.

The Brazilian playmaker has effectively gone on strike over a move to Barcelona. Liverpool have claimed that he is carrying a back injury, but that does not seem to be hampering Coutinho now that he is on international duty.

It seems evident that the 25-year-old has had his head turned by the offers from Catalonia, one of which was in the region of £119m, according to The Guardian.

The Reds have so far stood firm in their insistence that Coutinho is not for sale. If they remain stubborn, he could be reintegrated into the most feared attack in the division alongside Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Fimino. That is a front four which could deliver Liverpool an overdue first Premier League title.

But his unrest could force Anfield bosses into surrendering to the football food chain, and losing Coutinho would be a massive blow to Liverpool’s ambitions.
