Virgil van Dijk has been embroiled in a classic club versus player power struggle this summer, with Southampton refusing to bow down to his transfer request.

Liverpool have been leading the chase for the Dutchman, who is training with Southampton’s reserves and is yet to play for the first team this campaign. The Saints though are fed up of being bullied by the Merseysiders and seem intent on refusing Klopp what could be the missing piece in his title-chasing jigsaw.

The Reds are nothing short of explosive going forward, but cannot win that elusive Premier League title without investing in a commanding centre-back.

Chelsea and Manchester City have also been touted as possible destinations for the Saints captain. They too could use Van Dijk’s power and class in defence.

If Southampton do fold, as they have tended to do in previous summers, Van Dijk would be a massive addition for whichever club can convince the Saints to sell.
