Is there still time left in the window for Manchester United to pull off a transfer that would send shockwaves through the camps of their title rivals?

Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho has previously revealed that he would like to sign four players this summer. With Victor Lindleöf, Romelu Lukaku, and Nemanja Matic, the count is at three (if you discount Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s new contract).

The signs are that Mourinho wants a wide attacker to complete his quartet, as if having Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan wasn’t enough. Inter’s Ivan Perisic has been mooted as a target, but that deal seems dead and whispers of Gareth Bale to Old Trafford won’t go away.

The Welshman has long been on United and Mourinho’s radar, and Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has refused to rule out allowing Bale to leave.

He has been a success in Madrid, scoring 68 goals, including the winners in Champions League and Copa del Rey finals, and assisting 53 more. However, Cristiano Ronaldo’s amazing longevity and consistency, and the emergence of Marco Asensio as his possible heir makes Bale dispensable for the right price.

United have the funds and the stature to attract Bale. If they could persuade Bale and Real that the time was right, they would be almost impossible to beat.
