8 Reasons Why England Will Win Euro 2020
4. 3-2-1-2-2 Formation Looks Impressive
It’s a cliché to say England historically have played with a 4-4-2- formation, but in reality it is normally a variation upon the classic setup. Southgate has introduced the shock system of operating with back three with fullbacks either side. This setup seen through the Premier League, but never seen within the English national side.
Another large question mark was the decision to play Kieran Tripper in the full-back role and move Kyle Walker into the middle. Upon reflection, this turned out to be just one of Southgate’s many strokes of genius. Trippier took the World Cup by storm and has been hailed as one of England’s main innovators. The fullbacks allowed a high-intensity press when going forward, or a solid five when on the back foot. England finally had fire in the belly.
One of the most impressive characteristic changes was the ability to move the ball around. England have always been predicable and lateral, but with a new formation, they appeared to be more Manchester City than Stoke City.
